Ibarretxe hands the conclusions of the Bilbao Summit to Kofi Annan in Tunis
The Lehendakari (President of the Basque Government) Juan José Ibarretxe met the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Kofi Annan, in Tunis last Tuesday, 15 November, and handed him the Conclusions reached at the II World Summit against the Digital Divide, held in Bilbao on 9, 10 and 11 November. These 10 Principles, as Annan assured the Lehendakari, have been transmitted as a working document to the World Summit on the Information Society which started on 16 November in Tunis.
The head of the Basque executive expressed his satisfaction to Annan at having been able to call a meeting like the one held in Bilbao, while at the same time advocating for preventing globalisation from limiting solidarity and from undermining the identity of small nations. What should become globalised, with the help of the UN, insisted the Lehendakari, is welfare and not war or poverty.
