Meeting in Valenciennes (France) to prepare the Bilbao and Tunis summits
More than five hundred persons connected with new communication technologies met in the French locality of Valenciennes on 3 and 4 February last to prepare the World Summits on the Information Society which are to take place in the cities of Bilbao and Tunis next November.
The meeting in this French locality, called TIC 21, was promoted by UNITAR, the UN organisation that works in favour of cultural equality in all areas of the planet. The Basque Government was represented at TIC 21 by its Director for European Affairs, Mikel Antón, and by Josu Ocariz, Director of CIFAL BILBAO and Secretary General of the 2nd World Summit of Cities and Local Authorities, who each presented papers on the international policies against the digital divide, and who emphasised that events such as those in Bilbao and Tunis help to make it possible for citizens of all continents to be able to have access to new information technologies.
Among those attending the meeting in Valenciennes were representatives of the cultural world (universities and training centres), business world (service companies) and political world (state delegations).
