The UN and the Basque Government materialize their collaboration with the CIFAL BILBAO centre

Inauguration in May 2004 of the first UN international training centre related to the information society

The joint efforts of the UN and the Basque Government in favour of the development of electronic democracy in the world took shape in May 2004 with the inauguration of the CIFAL BILBAO centre. These installations have been incorporated into the network of twelve training centres which are spread around the world and whose activity is coordinated by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). CIFAL BILBAO is the only one of these complexes which is related entirely to the information society. The structure of which it forms a part is made up of installations located on all the continents. The other centres supervised by UNITAR comprise Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Curitiba (Brazil), Shanghai (China), Lyon (France) and Medellín (Colombia). The African installations are located in the cities of Ouagadougou and Nouakchott. The inauguration of CIFAL BILBAO in May 2004 was attended by the Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, Marcel A. Boisard, who is also Executive Director of UNITAR. Basque President Juan José Ibarretxe and the Mayor of Bilbao, Iñaki Altuna, were present on behalf of the Basque Government.
