The Basque Country is elected to the board of directors of eris@, the largest association of european regions working in favour of
the information society
At its latest annual General Assembly, held in Lille (France), eris@ (The European Regional Information Society Association) has approved the incorporation of the Basque Country onto its Board of Directors. The decision is in keeping with the intense efforts that several Basque public institutions are making on the occasion of the World Summit against the digital divide, which is to be held in Bilbao next November.
eris@ coordinates IANIS+ (Innovative Actions Network for the Information Society), which brings together 28 regions, has 44 members and includes Microsoft as its corporate partner. One of the main objectives of this network is to support European regions with projects for innovative actions in the field of the Information Society.
A delegation from SPRI and from CIFAL Bilbao took part, between 12 and 14 June, in the General Assembly of eris@, which is the largest association of European regions in the field of new technologies. In one of the papers given, the Basque delegation presented the II World Summit of Cities and Local Authorities on the Information Society, an event which is receiving extensive support from a large number of international organisations, cities and regions on all continents.
The Basque Country will be represented on the Board of Directors de eris@ by Juan José Duque, Deputy General Manager of SPRI. The rest of the positions on the executive body of eris@ are occupied by delegates from the French regions of Aquitaine and Nord-Pas de Calais and the Italian ones of Piemonte and Lazio, together with Saxony (Germany), Blekinge (Sweden), North Karelia (Finland) and Extremadura (Spain). Euskadi, the Basque Country, which has been a member of this association for two years, has been elected to this position on its governing body after several months in which it has presented numerous projects and initiatives related with the Information Society.
