Preparation for the Bilbao Summit

The Bilbao Summit will be prepared by:

  • The mobilisation of representatives from local authorities and their associations interested in debating their role in the Information Society and the responsibilities which this entails.
  • The establishment of cooperation between the public sector, the private one and the UN so as to develop applications and e-services which may contribute towards the development of all countries.
  • The organization of a series of activities of political and technical character, has been designed, to present the input of the Local Authorities and to establish the basis for a future knowledge exchange on the development of the information society.

The final goal is to present the conclusions obtained by Local Authorities worldwide throughout the process of the Summit of Bilbao and their further transfered to the World Summit on the Information Society in Tunis.

MILESTONES OF THE PROCESS

Therefore, 9 Thematic Workshops, one for each of the 9 key areas identified during the Geneva Summit: Accessibility and Inclusion, Culture and Identity, e-Government, e-Democracy, e-Health, e-Education, e-Business, Infrastructures and Safety and 4 Regional Conferences, one for each geographical area: Europe, Africa, Latin America-Caribbean and Asia-Pacific will be held. The conclusions of the “Conference on Financing Mechanisms” that will take place in May 2005 in Turin will be added to the results reached by the work groups.

2-Monterrey (Mexico); 8-9 September 2004

The meeting looks at underserved areas which cannot be reached with wired infrastructure and solutions for underserved areas in Latin America. Keynote speakers include Mr. Jose Maria Figueres, Chairman of UN ICT Taskforce, CEO of the World Economic Forum, former President of Costa Rica. Over 30 municipal leaders (mayors, CIOs, economic development executives) are among the participants.

3-Barcelona (Spain), 9-11 September 2004

The Dialogue was aimed at informing makers and practicioners in the field of urban and community-based security, through the sharing of experiences and best practices from around the world. The core conference themes were examined in the context of the information society paying particular attention to innovative prospects offered by the use of information and communication technologies in promoting security and harmonious intercultural coexistence.

This event has aimed at contributing to the preparation of the II World Summit of Cities and Local Authorities in the Information Society (Bilbao, 9-11 November 2005) and the United Nations World Summit on the Information Society (Tunis, 16-18 November 2005) by proposing concrete proposals on how to include cultural diversity in security and coexistence policiy in the information society.

4-Valenciennes (France), 3-4 February 2005

In total 500 players from local authorities, companies, international organisations, the States of Europe, NGO’s, associations, training centres, universities,the media, audiovisual production companies technical services. As an international forum, TIC21 will also be for UNITAR (UN) the official site for preparing aspects of “TIC’s and sustainable development for IT4ALL / BILBAO and the SMSI of TUNISIA in 2005.

5-day training session focusing on e-application for city administration, broadband as a multi-services platform and public safety in Asian context. Mayors from 10 to 15 big cities in China are the target audience.
